History of the JR Memorial Cruise for a Cure
The JR Memorial Cruise for a Cure at Indian Lake, Ohio raises funds to fight cancer in the name of the late Jerry Richardson. Jerry was a long-time resident of the Indian lake community and was taken far too soon in 2013 due to a malignant brain tumor. Since then a team of Indian Lake residents and volunteers have teamed with Lisa Cisco and Chris Quinn of the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer to try and help find a cure for this awful disease.
The event has grown exponentially since its inaugural year:
- In 2013, with only a pub crawl, the team raised $3000 in Jerry’s name for cancer research.
- In 2014, with the addition of silent and live auctions and live music, a check for $15,000 was presented to the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer and the Urban & Shelley Meyer Fund for Cancer Research at the OSUCCC-James.
- In 2015 the JR team added a raffle for a jet ski to the event and raised $85,000.
- In 2016 we were able to donate $131,000 to cancer research at the OSUCCC-James.
- In 2017 we donated $180,000 to this wonderful cause!! This is an increase of 5900% since 2013!!
- 2018 was a record year of attendees and raised a total of $204,200!
- A new record in 2019 with our biggest event to date and over $310,000!
- In 2020, even though the main event was canceled due to the pandemic, we managed to raise $160,000.
- We bounced back in 2021 and set a new attendance record and a new unbelievable total of $400,320!!!
- In 2022 we were able to donate $355,000 to this great cause.
Overall this brings our total donations for the last 10 years to $1.84 million dollars!! In 2023 we are hoping to exceed the 2 million dollar mark!!
We will continue to look for support for our event and are always thinking of ways that we can improve upon what we have already accomplished. We will not stop until we hear the words, “We have found a cure for cancer”.
